Musée du Louvre

The original Palais du Louvre was a small feudal fortress built in 1200 by Philippe-Auguste. Charles V was the first king to make the castle his residence but it was until 1564 that the plan was set to rebuilt the Louvre to the palace complex as it known today. The Louvre was opened as an art gallery in 1793 with the former personal art collection of François I as it's foundation. It now houses the largest public art collection in the world. The pyramid entrance was added only recently, by the late president François Mitterand.
