North Atlantic Multidecadal Variability: An investigation of dominant time scales and processes
accepted by the Journal of Climate

Welcome

My name is Leela Frankcombe. Since July 2006 I have been doing a PhD research project under the supervision of Henk Dijkstra at the Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU), part of Utrecht University.

Research

My research project is about the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), which is a pattern of sea surface temperature variability over the North Atlantic ocean. We approach the problem from a dynamical systems point of view, with the aim of reproducing the variability using the simplest possible ocean model. We are particularly interested in what controls the time scale of the variability.

AMO index

AMO index (AMOI) defined as the ten year running mean of SST averaged from 10N to 90N over the North Atlantic (data from the HadISST dataset).

AMO pattern

Spatial pattern of the AMO (SST in years 1950-1964 minus SST in years 1970-1984).
